Happy Chulalongkorn Day Thai-Everything-Lovers!

Happy Chulalongkorn Day Thai-Everything-Lovers!

October 23 is a national holiday in Thailand, and it is being celebrated as “King Chulalongkorn Day".

This national holiday - Chulalongkorn Day - honors the life and work of King Chulalongkorn, also known as Rama V.

The date, 23 October marks the day that he passed away at the age of 57 in 1910.

This much loved king ruled Thailand for 42 years, between the years 1868-1910. King Chulalongkorn continues to be respected until this day in the whole country for his adaptation of modernization. He is perhaps best known for his abolition of slavery. His other contributions are; administrative reforms, the introduction of railways and a postal system, and his commitment to religious freedom.

Thailand is the only country in Southeast Asia which has never been colonized and guess to whom Thailand owes it! King Chulalongkorn, of course. He managed to prevent Thailand from colonization by developing friendships in the countries he travelled to; western countries such America, Great Britain, Russia and France.

How is Chulalongkorn Day being celebrated in Thailand?

Many Thais show their respect for the great king by placing wreaths at his statues on this public holiday, especially in Dusit district.
